A heart warming story from India

Jim Jesudoss leads the New Dawn project, based in Madurai, a large city of 4-5m people not far from Madras in India. The project is supported by Christians in the Ipswich area.

Our dear English friends,

namelessgirl3How are you?  Last two weeks I couldn't sit and write this mail, though it was in the womb of my brain.  As you are aware I always want to share whatever happens here - good or bad, happy or sad.  This was a happy occasion which pulled us into the rescue of this nameless girl.

I hope you remember the death of mentally retarded children we faced last year which made us tired.  Last week when the police found this girl on the street of Madurai, they called us immediately to rescue her.  Unfortunately our bitter experience of last year (police enquiry, RDO inquest, the psychological reactions of other children, sleeplessness, media insensitivity etc) interfered and we hesitated to take the child into the shelter home.

The child was chronically ill with high percentage of cerebral palsy.  There was high pressure from the officials but we could withstand it with firmness. Evening at 1.30 pm Sharmi visited the child on the spot.  She heard an inner voice and a force within her to take the child in our custody. She called me immediately to discuss the matter.

We decided to take the child and to send her for medical treatment at the Government
Hospital.  Our volunteers and staff members came in support to look after the child at the hospital.  We contacted the doctors and made available the best possible treatment for the child.  After four days the doctors told us that she is fine and fit to travel. She was brought back to the shelter home.

The next morning we shifted the child to Mayiladuthurai where specialized care is available for such children.  Ranjith with another person escorted the child to Mayiladuthurai.  We were happy that we responded to the need and found the best alternate care for her. It makes me feel happy that we responded to the inner voice "when I was left alone on the street you have rescued me and sheltered me".  Let glory be with God.

Thanks for listening to this story which affirms our commitment.

With love,

Jim
