A radical alternative to clubbing
Radical lounge is a live music and open mic event which promotes positive material from singers, rappers, poets and artists. The first event took place on the 12th March at the new ‘Goals Soccer Centre’ located beside Suffolk New College
The evening included performances of original material by Rayon Nelson and his band, and open mic sessions with local talent rapper Karim, Daniel Fisher, Renata Allen, radio presenter and rapper Brother Touch, DJ Carl Herbert, and Emmanuel Adeship.
Over 40 people relaxed to a mix of various kinds of music and many took part in the open mic session. There were also games and hot food was provided by Starbright Catering. Prizes were given away and over £100 was raised for the Youth Music Charity. The night was full of soul, rock and hip-hop beats - all with a positive message!
The next Radical lounge will be at Brasilia Café in Ipswich on the 4th June from 8pm to 11pm. This will again include positive live music and entertainment from local talent. There will be games, tasty Brazilian food, art work on show and prizes to be won. Open mic will also be available throughout the night. The event is open to ages 16 andabove, and people will require ID if intending to purchase drinks.
Radical Lounge - an unusual name
Radical Lounge was started by Rayon Nelson as a part of his university dissertation. Rayon said “I wanted to create something that would be an alternative to clubbing and to offset a lot of the negativity seen within Ipswich (especially among the youth). I made it apart of my university work so that I had no choice but to do it!”
“The name came from a time when I really wanted to be radical for God; different, unique and REAL. So I decided to call the event Radical lounge because I wanted it to be different from everything else within the community - a place where you can just come and socialise whilst being entertained. And I wanted it to be real without compromise.”
“Throughout my life as a Christian, I have realised that not every one comes to church or a Christian youth group and an event like radical lounge creates a platform where they can come to be inspired by the testimonies that are shared through music, poetry and art.”
Rayon is currently looking to extend the Radical Lounge team. If you think you could help in any way, please contact him at rayonnelson@hotmail.co.uk
