Sculpture centrepiece of Christian Aid exhibition

From 3 to 18 February, a thought-provoking exhibition will be on display in St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, which highlights some of the issues prioritised by Christian Aid in its work to fight poverty and injustice.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a sculpture by British born artist Mel Howse with accompanying photographic panels which demonstrate Christian Aid’s work throughout the world.

The exhibition, on display in the south transept, can be seen in the Cathedral between 9.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. Access will only be restricted when there are services taking place.

On the opening day, Thursday 3 February, there will be a presentation evening by Christian Aid staff, which will give an insight into their work with a chance to ask questions. Fairtrade refreshments will be available from 7.00 p.m. in the Cathedral Centre with the presentations starting at 7.30 p.m. Entry is free of charge but donations are welcome towards the work of Christian Aid.

‘The exhibition will challenge visitors to think abut the relationship between rich and poor,’ comments Sarah Friswell, Public Relations Manager at the Cathedral. ‘The Cathedral is keen to play its part in raising the profile of such issues and in prompting people into action.’

The sculpture by Mel Howse is in the shape of an eye and is made of enamel on steel.

The Poverty Over exhibition is visiting St Edmundsbury Cathedral as part of a national tour of cathedrals, which started at Southwark Cathedral, London, in January.
