Volunteers wanted for SU camp in Serbia
Scripture Union Serbia is organising a week’s English camp for Serbian 11-16 yr-olds this summer.
They expect about 35 or so, including some who are physically disabled. The Serbian team will lead Bible studies, games, sports, etc. The team from the UK will provide an English lesson each day in groups, with activities to make learning English interesting and fun, as well as joining in other activities and probably putting on an English evening.
Titel is a small town on the river Tisa, north of Belgrade. Although the area is mainly a flat agricultural plain, Titel Hill is a significant landmark. The camp organisers a re renting a large house for the duration of the camp, and a smaller house opposite with better facilities for the disabled children and carers. There is a sports stadium nearby that can be used for games, etc.
The camp runs from Sunday 1 August to Sunday 8 August 2010. The travel arrangements have not yet been finalised, but the team expect to travel out on Friday 30 July or Saturday 31 July, so as to be able to settle in before the children arrive. Depending on flights, they will return on either Sunday 8 or Monday 9 August.
Serbia is a sad country which has seen a lot of conflict in the recent Balkan wars, and where life can be hard, with poor prospects for employment, etc. The traditional Orthodox Christian church is quite influential, but many people are not aware of God’s love and the challenge of new life through Jesus. The Ipswich group will be supporting the Serbian SU team as they seek to share God’s truth and love.
Local organiser, Ken Fitchew, says “Interested to come and help? The main requirement is to really want to make friends with the young people, and to share faith in Jesus with them. There is no need to be an expert in English grammar, since the teenagers will really want practice in speaking English, but an interest in languages helps!”
“We will try and get together before the trip, to look at some key principles on how to help them, and for a quick brush up on English! The other important need is to be willing to go with a servant heart, to really want to help the local church in their outreach. This will present challenges in doing some things differently to how they are done in the UK, and so will provide an opportunity for seeing what it is like to live in a (slightly) different culture!”
The cost will be that of the flight plus a contribution to the costs of the camp and local transport etc. The total may be around £400, plus getting to the airport, travel insurance, etc.
