Perspectives Schools work project expands
During 2009 Perspectives Pregnancy Crisis Centre provided presentations on sex, relationships and teenage parenting to nearly 1,000 students in two Ipswich secondary schools. As a result of the welcome received, they have felt that God has given them an opportunity to offer the programme to further secondary schools in the town.
In faith, they applied for grant funding and within 2 weeks of making the application had been awarded £5,000. This money, and a specific gift, has enabled them to employ Michelle Jones on a part time basis to develop the project further.
Michelle is a registered adult and specialist community public health nurse, and has prepared and delivered the previous sex and relationship education lessons. She now hopes to be able to develop more tailored presentations, which should meet individual schools needs and encourage young people to abstain from having sex until they are married.
Michelle says “Teenage pregnancy rates in Ipswich are above the national average and the highest in Suffolk, whilst the rates of sexually transmitted infections are rising sharply among young people in general. At Perspectives Pregnancy Crisis Centre we have felt called to help young people to evaluate their lifestyle choices and to reduce risky sexual behaviour.”
