Town Pastors love their toast!!!
By Liz Beaton
Most people (we hope) will have heard of the Town Pastors by now. They are Christian volunteers who tread the pavements of Ipswich Town Centre – spring, summer, autumn and winter – on Friday and Saturday nights.
Starting at about 10pm and finishing around 4am, it can be a long, sometimes wet, cold, windy, foggy, frosty (etc etc) night. The Town Pastors (who work in a team of six) are often kept very busy, as they seek to watch out for and help vulnerable people, always ready with a bottle of water, a blanket or a listening ear when needed.
What many people may not know is that, hidden away in the background behind them, there is another group of people – usually a minimum of fourteen on any given night. Just as valuable as those working on the streets, these are members of the prayer team. Some will be praying at home, setting their alarm clocks and getting out of bed in the early hours of the morning, or staying up late to pray at the beginning of the night.
Then there are the much appreciated bods who operate at our base in the Town Centre. They are greatly loved – these are the multi taskers of the team. Not only do they pray, they also answer the phone to the home prayer team, and not least of all they make tea and toast!!!! At midnight or 2 in the morning, when the tiredness, the aching legs, the cold etc can really kick in, here are the smiling faces greeting us at the door with those wonderful words – “Tea or coffee? Would you like toast?”
Sometimes they have to be ready with a listening ear and an arm around the shoulders, on nights when it gets a bit fraught outside those four comforting walls.
Would you consider joining out team???
We are holding out next lot of training for Town Pastors in February – application forms are available on our website – www.townpastors.org.uk
Minimum age to apply is 18 – there is no upper limit!
If that sounds a bit daunting, how about manning the phone and the toaster? We are always looking for new members to strengthen our Town Centre prayer team.
Or how about praying for an hour from the warmth and comfort of your own home?
All applicants for any of the above roles should be members of a local church, and a reference will be requested from your Church leader……..
