Prayer for Zimbabwe
At a meeting organised by Suffolk Churches for Zimbabwe, local Christian, Margaret Mashonganyika, spoke about the desperate situation that now applies for so many people in that country. This was followed by an overview of the situation by Sue Barclay of Tearfund.
Before the present crisis Zimbabwe was one of Africa’s strongest economies, but changes over the last few years have been disastrous. For instance, the meeting was told that:
- 75% of teachers had now left the profession, because they have not been paid
- Unemployment now stands at 94%
- Crop production is down 51%
- The Zimbabwean currency has been suspended indefinitely, leaving the US dollar as the main means of monetary transaction – which makes life difficult for those in rural areas who have never seen a dollar
- All illegal buildings (i.e. those built without planning permission) have been demolished, leaving many people without homes or food
However there is some hope. Sue Barclay reported that since the Unity Government came into being things have been improving, although health and food issues are still critical.
Led by pastor Clever Gorejena, the meeting then spent some time in prayer for the people and government of Zimbabwe. Pastor Gorejena will be setting up an ongoing prayer support group, which all are welcome to attend. Donations were also collected and sent to Tearfund.
